community – LumeCube

When we were kids, there was truly no better feeling than running outside, taking a deep breath of fresh air & embracing everything mother nature had to offer. Whether it was exploring the uncharted territory of the backyard, or heading off in search of new adventures, the natural world would never disappoint. Although we are now all grown up (bummer!), we still consider ourselves kids at heart, and believe that it is not only our duty, but our responsibility as a brand to help ensure that the future children of our planet have the same opportunities to love, explore and thrive in everything mother nature has to offer.

Following our hearts, we’ve closely evaluated every aspect of our business and have structured ourselves to be as environmentally friendly as possible, but to us, this means far more than just recycling our leftover waste. At the core of Sustainability lies the term “Responsible Innovation”, and that’s what we chose to focus on here at Lume Cube. While we continue to remain innovative through all of our products and practices, we understand that we have a responsibility to our planet, and that the decisions we make day-in and day-out, if made correctly, have the ability to impact this world in the most positive of ways. For these reasons, we’ve implemented 3 pillars of sustainability here at Lume Cube that help us not only limit our negative impact on the environment, but even more importantly, maximize on our positive impact towards both the global community and environment alike.

Deforestation is an issue that is taking our planet by storm, to the tune that 1.5 acres of forest are cut down every single second. Not only is the detrimental to our planet from a global warming and climate perspective, but it is estimated that over 28,000 species of animals will become extinct in the next 25 years as a result of this issue…so we’ve decided to take action. For every $100 spent on, we plant two (2) trees in deforested, poverty stricken areas around the world thanks to the help of the great people at WeForest.

Through this initiative, Lume Cube and WeForest are taking daily steps to help restore degraded forests (chosen location is India at the moment) with a goal to regain ecological integrity and enhance human well-being in these degraded landscapes. Encompassing everything from the planting and nurturing of trees, to starting small locally run enterprises surrounding the forestry trade (such as nurseries), Female Empowerment is at the center of WeForest’s initiatives. Their program allows locally impoverished women to engage in their local landscape while contributing to both the environment and economy at the same time, something we are very proud to be a part of. As we continue to scale this program and help reforest the earth, we encourage others to take action as well. Trees Planted

Undeniably, as we continue to scale and grow our company, the amount of disposable materials we collect grows along with it. We’ve chosen to look at this not as a burden, but as an opportunity. An opportunity to provide something great for those in need. Within the Lume Cube office, every ounce of excess cardboard, plastic, aluminum, and glass are each allocated to their respective recycling stations within our warehouse and then disposed of weekly at the Miramar Recycling Center in San Diego, CA. Rather than just allocate these materials in a bin, we’ve done our homework and studied the best ways to do this in order to maximize our positive impact (i.e. crushing aluminum cans to allow for minimal airspace within the Recycling Center, and specifically cutting Cardboard down to appropriate sizes to make it more efficient for transportation, etc). All of these small details are important to us for one specific reason…Giving Back.

Throughout this journey, we’ve become so grateful for how fortunate we truly are to be doing something we love, surrounded by people we love, and to be in a position to influence the world in a positive way. This is exactly why we make that recycling trip every Friday and turn in our materials for cold, hard cash…Cash that we directly turn into putting smiles on the faces of those less fortunate. 100% of the funds generated through this weekly program are donated to charities supporting under-privileged youth in the state of California. We truly believe that dreams can come true, so we have set a structure with the funds to continually provide school supplies to children in need and promote the pursuit of education to those who cannot afford it.

Additionally, a portion of the funds go to providing food to the families of these children who aren’t able to attain it themselves. The successes at Lume Cube have been great, but providing opportunities like these to those who do not have them is what truly what keeps us going. Since recently starting the recycling program, the Lume Cube team has properly disposed of the below, and we cannot wait to see those numbers increase weekly which will allow us to give back in even greater ways:

Among all of our successes, how could we not share a little with the local community who has supported us since day one, San Diego, California. Each month, the Lume Cube team takes a “community field trip” to connect and give back to those less fortunate in our city. Whether it be handing out socks for the homeless, or serving holiday meals to those less fortunate, we’re always willing to do our part. See below for a quick reel on a recent outing that put smiles on the faces of San Diego’s homeless community.

The Lume Cube Team went to Downtown San Diego last month to provide wool socks for the less fortunate using the earnings from the Lume Cube Recycling Program.

Lume Cube worked with Bayside Commnuity Center to provide food and supplies for people in need for the holiday seasons.
